Schlei

The Schlei is a nearly 40-kilometre-long inlet that winds from the Baltic Sea deep into the Schleswig-Holstein hinterland as far as Schleswig. With its calm bays, wide "Noren" (side bays) and the charming mix of water, reeds and gentle hills, it is regarded as one of the most beautiful sailing areas of the western Baltic – ideal for relaxed cruising away from wind and waves. Important to know: the Schlei is shallow over long stretches, so it's essential to stick closely to the marked fairways.

The gateway to the Schlei is the entrance at Schleimünde, where the idyllic pilot-island harbour with its legendary "Giftbude" (bar) invites you to a first stop. Right behind it lies the fishing village of Maasholm with its rustic charm. Anyone mooring here or in Kappeln should keep an eye on the opening times of the Kappeln swing bridge – it opens hourly at 40 minutes past the hour, clearing the way into the inner Schlei:

Around Kappeln, visiting sailors will find well-equipped marinas such as Yachtzentrum Kappeln or Henningsen & Steckmest.

Further inland, a visit to Arnis, Germany's smallest town, is worthwhile – its maritime flair and traditional shipyards enchant many sailors. Before reaching the upper Schlei, you pass the bridge at Lindaunis. It is currently undergoing extensive renovation and, during the construction work, opens for shipping at fixed times:

A little patience pays off, as beyond it the wide waters of the Große Breite open up.

At the innermost end of the Schlei awaits the town of Schleswig, with the centrally located Stadthafen Schleswig and Schleswiger Yachthafen. From here it's not far to the magnificent Schloss Gottorf and the Haithabu Viking Museum, which brings the region's fascinating history vividly to life.
