What is diesel?

Diesel – sold at the pump as EN 590 road diesel or as marine gas oil (MGO) – is the fuel that powers the vast majority of inboard sailboat and motorboat engines in the Baltic. At most marina fuel berths it is the default grade, and often the only one on offer.

Using diesel in your boat

Modern common-rail engines and older mechanical diesels both run on standard road diesel. In the EU this normally contains up to 7% biodiesel (B7), which is fine for regular use. Boats that sit unused for months are more prone to "diesel bug" – microbial growth in a part-full tank – so keep the tank topped up over winter and consider a biocide additive.

Availability in the Baltic

Diesel is available at nearly every fuelling station on this map, from large commercial quays to small club pontoons with a card-operated pump. Prices and opening hours vary widely, and smaller stations may be self-service only or closed outside the season.
